1827/3 CAPPED BUST - TYPE 1 25C
1827 is the year the Mormon founder Joseph Smith claimed to have been given golden tablets from God on Mount Cumorah in New York. Smith had been visited by an angel in 1823 and told the location of the buried plates but the angel prevented him from removing them for four years and when he possessed them, he locked them away in a chest as he was instructed not to show anyone but to transcribe their meaning. This 1827 capped bust quarter recalls the founding year of Mormonism.
All early U.S. coins types are very rare in proof format, and the Large Size Bust Quarter of 1815-1828 is no exception. Original mintages for these proof deliveries are unknown, but they were undoubtedly very limited given the paucity of survivors in today's market.
